This interactive sculpture is a play on the imitation of life. The beating heart suggests a kind of vitality, but one that is ultimately synthetic. Inspiration for the ribcage and heart was drawn from AI and while we inch closer to human replication in technology there will always be limits. By softly hugging the ribcage the heart will begin to beat. A firm hug will make the heartbeat faster and users can experience a connection with the simulated organism. While this interactive sculpture doesn’t necessarily serve to accomplish a mission, or resolve an issue, I believe it can make viewers take a step back and think of the connections between humans and artificial intelligence.
